*SHEEP EID*
Many organisations including the Livestock Auctioneers Association, the NFU,
the NSA and DEFRA have been working together to resolve the possible pitfalls
of EID. Salient proposed points to date include:-
• Lambs under 12 months of age which are destined for slaughter may be
moved using a single batch tag (flock number) from their holding of birth
(Slaughter Derogation);
• Older sheep may be moved using the current system until 2012;
• Female sheep born in 2010 which are kept for breeding will be fully
EID by nine months of age (or when leaving the holding of birth, which ever is
the sooner) using two yellow ear tags – one EID and one normal tag showing the
full flock and individual numbers;
• If sheep are moved to a third party (ie. a feeder) they must read and
record the number of sheep in each batch which they move (batch within batch);
• The proposed implementation of EID is on 31st December, 2009;
• Traceability will improve by hardly 10% and therefore achieve little;
• Financial savings to the sheep industry will be at a minimum.
NOTE – up to 50% of lambs sold in the latter half of the year go for further
feeding by third parties. A large majority of these have expressed that they
would not buy lambs for further feeding if they had to read and record ear all
tags unless there was a significant reduction in the purchase price to truly
reflect this extra work. Prices would fall dramatically for both liveweight
as well as deadweight sales if these feeders are not in the market place, with
the LAA suggesting that the cost to the industry could be at least £60 million
and not £4 million as quoted by DEFRA.
Current proposals include full EID for all sheep born after 1st January, 2010
to give flock-masters greater flexibility, whilst the LAA suggest that a
single electronic tag for slaughter be used for lambs up to 12 months of
age. This latter suggestion would involve reading the tags at "critical
control points" (eg. at a market, collection centre, slaughter house or when
farmer to farmer trading) using - and therefore sharing the cost of - these
electronic tag readers. For more information please contact www.laa.co.uk
